Description

I was on Social Security disability at age 58 when I started yoga. I gradually became stronger, more flexible and many of my medical conditions improved dramatically. At age 65 I began my teacher's training with the mission of bringing yoga to people over 65 and those with medical conditions.

I teach people alignment, range-of-motion, body awareness, strength building, balance, agility and flexibility. People move gradually into a healthier way of moving. Individuals with all ages and types of medical conditions come to my class and walk out feeling better than when they walked in.

What does it take to improve your wellness? Commitment to feeling better. Students who sincerely want to feel better, show up in class and practice on their own. Yoga is a matter of repetition and attention. To learn any skill, you must practice, practice, practice.

In the mornings I teach in two senior living centers. I have people as old as 91 doing a very active chair practice, those in the middle level, and people who practice totally sitting in a chair. My oldest student, who has been in my class for 6.75 years, almost 97. Most students come twice a week and several have 100% attendance over a three-month period. These are people committed to standing tall and walking without assistance well into their nineties.

In the afternoons, from 2-3 P.M., I teach at A Mindfulness Life Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, 85253. This studio is in the SE corner of N Scottsdale RD and E. Shea. Blvd. Monday’s class is Stability Yoga. This is a very active class where we do postures sitting in a chair, standing, at the wall and with our hands on the seat of the chair. The class stands for 30 to 40 minutes and does no work on the floor. On Wednesdays is Chair/Balance yoga. This is a more-gentle class working in the chair and standing behind the seat of the chair. We only stand for 15-20 minutes. On Thursdays I teach therapeutic yoga. Here you will get down on the floor at the beginning and the end of the class and come up to standing once during the class. The topics covered depend upon the requests of the students. Shoulders, back, knees, hips, neck, feet, arms, hands, and core are all covered over the course of three months.

These classes may be attended one at a time, in a group of 5 classes, or in a 3-month series of 10 to 12 classes depending on the holidays during that quarter. Many of my students have practiced with me for one to five years. They are very welcoming to new students and extremely friendly.

I also work with students individually in my home or in yours. This gives the student an opportunity to have individually, customized attention and meet specific needs.
