Sandi Melody
I discovered yoga at the age of 16 and have LOVED practicing since 1981. It has always been therapeutic for me, and I have always resonated with the philosophy of Peace and Love. Over the years, as yoga became more and more popular, I found myself missing the old days of small classes that felt personalized, and big spaces with lots of room for personal space between mats. I actually decided to take my teacher training not to become a teacher, but so that I could practice at home away from the crowded studios. My intention was never to teach. I was already a teacher in several disciplines and my yoga was something I did just for me.
I completed my 240 hr Classical Yoga Teacher Training at Langara College in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 2014 and continued educating myself in the subtle energy work which was very familiar to me as a contemporary vocal pedagogy teacher. Eventually this interest led to become certified as an Advanced 500 RYT at Ajna Therapeutic Yoga College in Victoria, BC in 2020. Like anything in life, the more passionate you become about something, the more you want to share it with others! I have officially registered as teacher with Yoga Alliance, and I am half way to my 1000 hour Yoga Therapist Certification.
I was introduced to "breath-work" and "physical technique" from an early age. As a competitive swimmer and gymnast I developed an acute awareness for the mind-body connection and the power we have to intentionally change our internal and external experience. My interest in this mind-body connection led to my training as technical swim coach and I worked my way up to The NCCP Senior Level 3 by the time I was 17yrs old.
Post secondary I continued studying of the mechanics of the human body and techniques for keeping healthy, and I became a certified BCPRA Fitness Leader & Personal Trainer. At this time I was also diving into a personal study of Buddhism and Iyengar Yoga, which led to a year in South East Asia and culminated at a 10 Day Silent Retreat in a remote village in Thailand where I learned Vipassana Meditation.
I am a formally trained Jazz Vocalist and have a 27 year career as a contemporary voice pedagogist. I combined my two passions into "Yoga-sing!" We offer 2 retreats at Stowel Lake Farm on Salt Spring Island, BC, CANADA every year, as well as an ongoing online class where we study voice and yoga and breathwork. (Each class is taylored to the students interests and is recorded so students have something to practice with inbetween lessons.)
I also offer The Tensegrity Repair Series online, as well as Yoga for SUP (that's "for", not "on" Stand Up Paddle Board).
FUN is my philosophy, EDUCATION is my mandate and EXPERIENCE is my method. :)
